The Knot and WeddingWire, two leading brands in the global wedding planning industry, today reveal that nearly 34,000 US couples will get married on October 19, 2019, the most popular wedding day of the year.

A Comprehensive Snapshot of October 19 Weddings

On this day, more than 474,000 wedding professionals—including florists, caterers, photographers, musicians and more—will work to bring couples’ wedding visions to life. With to-be-weds looking to infuse their personalities, interests and passions into their wedding day, this is no small feat. Wedding pros will help 8,129 couples serve a tasty late-night snack and 7,452 couples incorporate local décor or cuisine elements from where they met or grew up. Additionally, as couples put their own twists on traditions, 11,517 wedding parties will be mixed gender; 14,905 couples will write and recite their own vows; and 5,759 will incorporate cultural or religious traditions into their wedding ceremonies.

2019 WeddingWire Guest Study

In advance of the most popular wedding day of the year, WeddingWire conducted the 2019 WeddingWire Guest Study to gain perspective on the wedding guest experience—from travel, accommodations and RSVPs, to expenses, gifting and favorite moments from the big day. The study found that when it comes to the wedding reception, guests pay most attention to food (77%), followed by music (55%) and the venue/setting (51%). As guests are preparing for upcoming weddings, their top challenges include finding something to wear (44%), keeping costs reasonable (27%), and choosing a gift for the to-be-weds (24%).

On Saturday, October 19, 4.3 million guests will attend a wedding, with 1.7 million of those guests traveling out of town to do so. On average, each wedding guest spends $430 attending a wedding, including a wedding gift for the to-be-weds. However, this price fluctuates significantly depending on whether travel is involved. For those staying local, the average cost comes down to $180, whereas guests who fly out of town are looking at an average of $1,440 due to air travel and accommodations like hotels or property rentals.

Additional highlights from the WeddingWire 2019 Guest Study include:

  • Roughly half of guests purchased a new outfit for the most recent wedding they attended and spent, on average, $155.
  • Half of guests say it’s most convenient to RSVP online (53%). Mailing in a card is preferred by three-in-ten guests (29%), while 19% do not have a preference.
  • Only 6% admit to RSVPing late or not at all—a lower than expected percentage as couples cite getting guests to RSVP as a top challenge for them, according to WeddingWire communications research*.
  • When deciding whether or not to attend a wedding, top considerations for traveling guests include travel/flight options and costs for those flying (53%), and the venue location for those driving (39%).

 

October 19 Wedding Registries According to The Knot Registry Data

While tangible gifts may take the lead for most couples getting hitched on October 19, these couples also had 7,769 unique cash funds on The Knot Registry, which can be used for anything from honeymoon experiences to gym memberships, puppy adoption or home renovation funds. To date, October 19 couples have received $692,038 via their cash funds.

Methodology

Using a mix of behavioral and survey data, The Knot and WeddingWire partnered to analyze couples registered on their sites who are getting married in 2019—including their wedding registries and guest insights—to provide a comprehensive view of the most popular wedding day of 2019. Findings were derived using the WeddingWire 2019 Guest Study, a national survey among roughly 1,000 US adults age 22-54 who have attended at least one wedding in the past year; on-site registration data; and insights gathered from couples with registries on The Knot married on October 19, 2019.
